by Richard Cuccaro It's 5am, one morning in late July. I will be moving silently through our studio apartment with a flashlight clenched between my teeth, trying not to wake the still-sleeping wife. She'll have been up late the night before fixing food for the journey and for the week. I'll weave groggily into the bathroom and the cellphone on my belt will catch on the spring-lever door handle and it will twang slightly, causing me to wince. She'll stir, but not wake up. I'll be up gathering odds and ends to stuff into too many bags for our trip to Falcon Ridge, where we are vendors and campers as well as festival-goers, needing numerous changes to deal with heat, cold and rain. Do we have enough batteries? Where are the subscription forms? Did we get all the flashlights? We will pack the Subaru Forester with more than seems possible, Passers-by will say as we load, "You can't get all that in there." But we can and we will (there's always the roof rack) just like last year and the year before that. Once the vehicle is filled and trussed on top, we'll breathe that first sigh both relief and release. The tethers of Manhattan life will pop and let go and we will begin to float free, swinging out into city traffic and heading northward up Sixth Avenue. There are two-lane country roads miles and miles away. They pull at us with growing urgency. Away from steel, concrete and glass. Away from bodies underground, rushing for trains, weaving and dodging, narrowly avoiding collision. We'll recognize and feed that hunger for lush leafy green and for low clouds casting their shadows on rolling hills out past the farms. All signs point outward. Here we go! The NJ Folk Project Festival has Cheryl Wheeler and Bob Franke, two of our favorites. Cheryl's voice has captivated us since we heard her in the early 90's. Bob's skill as a songwriter is legendary. Jimmy LaFave will be at Kerrville and the Woody Guthrie Festival. Shown here with Andrew Hardin on lead backup guitar. As usual, Kerrville, the mecca for singer/songwriters has a mind-boggling array of performers from all over the United States. We've had nine of them on our cover and have our eye on a bunch more from this year's list. We'd like to have a chat with four in particular, Michael Smith, Eric Taylor, Ray Wylie Hubbard and David Olney (said that last year, too). We like Ray Wylie's attitude when he sings "We're from Texas, so #&#$% you!" Makes me wish I was a Texan too. The latest jolt we got from Michael Smith was his opus, "Zippy" where the words tumble out at a pace fast enough to give his tongue a hernia ("Life gets 'zippy' when you stop doin' weed"). David Olney and Eric Taylor teamed up in 2002 for the darkly magnificent Texas Song Theater, a layered spoken and sung performance that had audiences gasping. Each has songs that leave other writers' work in the dust. In addition to a lot of great music and consciousness-raising, both nature and the sloop Clearwater form the backdrop for a breathtaking spectacle. Join us for two great days at Croton Point Park. David Amram will be joining the line-up this year at beautiful Croton State Park for Clearwater Festival. A multi-instrumentalist, his long-ago immersion in the beat world infuses his stage act. It's always an enriching experience. Pete Seeger will be in attendance as usual. This was a banner year for Seeger-lovers. The 2007 film, The Power of Song, gave us all a more complete picture of his courage, his strength and his fierce independence. Our friends, Fred Gillen and Matt Turk, Seeger and Guthrie acolytes will be performing as a duo and with Hope Machine. They'll be appearing on both the main stage and at their perennial haunt, The Circle of Song. Mike and Ruthy are Michael Merenda and Ruth Ungar Merenda. After seven years with The Mammals, they're doing some touring on their own. We're very excited to see what they've been doing musically. This, in addition to their becoming new parents. Like a north wind, Canadian Ken Whitely blew the room away at the 2007 Northeast Folk Alliance Conference. He'll be performing at the Mariposa Folk Festival At Mariposa, we're not surprised to see Ken Whitely. We saw him for the first time at the 2007 Northeast Folk Alliance Conference. He blew the room away at the formal showcases. It amazes and gratifies us to see that Ronnie Hawkins is still playing. Way back in the 50's, we got off on a rockabilly single, "40 Days," as recorded by Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. The Hawks later became The Band and we all know how that turned out. I hope we can reinstate that little tradition. Red Molly has a new CD out, Love and Other Tragedies. We've missed a bunch of their gigs lately and will be eager to see them perform the new stuff. Richard Shindell will always be a shining example of what a contemporary singer/songwriter can be. The eloquence of "Writing in the Margins" is typical of his work. A recent check of the web site turned up new information. It gets like this every year at Falcon Ridge when the audience sings along at tribute (Beatles, Dylan, Guthrie) sets.
Brad Yoder and Joe Crookston teamed up last year at the Acoustic Live showcases at our booth at Falcon Ridge. The Falcon Ridge Folk Festival is where we're really in our element. We're on-site a day early. After setting up the tent and canopy, we'll get dinner in Great Barrington, then hit the hay early. The following morning, we set about the serious business of getting our booth ready. We'll also get some flyers out about the Acoustic Live showcases held in front of our booth. This year, so far, we have -- Thursday:: Phil Henry, Cadence Carroll; Friday: Susan Kane, WA9 duo (Brian & Katie),Charles Nolan, Aaron Nathans, Rick Snyder, My Dad's Truck, Marc Douglas Berardo; Saturday: Phil Minissale, Scott Seltzer Meg Braun, Greg Klyma, Lara Herscovitch, Anthony da Costa and Sunday: My Dad's Truck & Friends- Gospel show and Midway March, Michael Berkowitz. This year, the Falcon Ridge most wanted from the Friday emerging artists features the aforementioned wunderkind, Anthony da Costa (he's already tired of that, I'm sure. Last time, I promise, A! After all, you're 17 now!). There's also Joe Crookston, Randall Williams and Lindsay Mac. Of course we're thrilled to see all the big guns: Dar Williams, Vance Gilbert , Eliza Gilkyson, Chris Smither, Martin Sexton and Patty Larkin. David Massengill and Jack Hardy will be performing together. That's a long-overdue treat. Red Molly is back (Back? They're all over the place, touring behind the new album. We couldn't be happier for them. And us.) Since Abbie Gardner is a member of the trio, she can team up with Anthony to play songs from their brand new CD together, Bad Nights - Better Days. Steve Earle, who will be playing Philly, is shown here during a musical interlude at an interview at the 92nd St. Y in NYC The Philadelphia Folk Festival has one of our all-time favorites, Steve Earle. This is, as a rule, another Saturday treat for us. However if Steve is scheduled for Sunday, we're gonna have to change our plans. We'll be eager to hear his lovely wife, Allison Moorer, both solo and we hope, providing backing vocals for Steve. Local heroes Anthony daCosta and Red Molly will be here and so will David Massengill. We thought Kathy Mattea was more country than folk, but then, the lines have blurred a lot over the years. There's no doubt about Janis Ian and Judy Collins. Folk doesn't get any classier than these two. I can't be sure, but I think that Tom Paxton performed at the first Philly festival I attended back in 1964. It's great to see him still getting it done.
